Application of a vertex chain operation algorithm on topological analysis of three-dimensional fractured

Frontiers of Structural and Civil Engineering 2017, Volume 11, Issue 2,   Pages 187-208 doi: 10.1007/s11709-017-0391-0

Abstract: Identifying the morphology of rock blocks is vital to accurate modelling of rock mass structures. This paper applies the concepts of directed edges and vertex chain operations which are typical for block tracing approach to block assembling approach to construct the structure of three-dimensional fractured rock masses. Polygon subtraction and union algorithms that rely merely on vertex chain operation are proposed, which allow a fast and convenient construction of complex faces/loops. Apart from its robustness in dealing with finite discontinuities and complex geometries, the advantages of the current methodology in tackling some challenging issues associated with the morphological analysis of rock blocks are addressed. In particular, the identification of complex blocks with interior voids such as cavity, pit and torus can be readily achieved based on the number and the type of loops. The improved morphology visualization approach can benefit the pre-processing stage when analyzing the stability of rock masses subject to various engineering impacts using the block theory and the discrete element method.

Strategic Study of CAE 2022, Volume 24, Issue 2,   Pages 64-74 doi: 10.15302/J-SSCAE-2022.02.008

Abstract:

The discrete manufacturing industry in China is currently being transformed and upgraded. Digital transformation and intelligent upgrade is an inevitable choice for China’s discrete manufacturing industry, as intelligent manufacturing can promote the quality, efficiency, and competitiveness of discrete manufacturing. The sub-sectors of discrete manufacturing in China differs significantly and requires diversified paths for digital transformation and intelligent upgrade. In this paper, we first summarize the typical characteristics of the discrete manufacturing industry, explore the challenges regarding the digital transformation and intelligent upgrade of the industry, and elaborate the common key technologies including advanced manufacturing, new-generation information, and new-generation artificial intelligence. Subsequently, we investigate four typical cases to present the frontier application progress in the field in China, and propose the following key development tasks: (1) achieving breakthroughs in keys enabling technologies for intelligent manufacturing, (2) developing intelligent manufacturing equipment, (3) building digital and intelligent workshops and factories, (4) providing digital and intelligent services, and (5) building standards and safety systems. Furthermore, it is necessary to accelerate pilot application, highlight domestication, increase the reserve of high-tech talents, and formulate relevant laws and regulations, to promote the high-quality development of China’s discrete manufacturing industry.

Frontiers of Medicine 2020, Volume 14, Issue 3,   Pages 357-367 doi: 10.1007/s11684-019-0699-3

Abstract: Pediatric cough is a heterogeneous condition in terms of symptoms and the underlying disease mechanisms. Symptom phenotypes hold complicated interactions between each other to form an intricate network structure. This study aims to investigate whether the network structure of pediatric cough symptoms is associated with the prognosis and outcome of patients. A total of 384 cases were derived from the electronic medical records of a highly experienced traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) physician. The data were divided into two groups according to the therapeutic effect, namely, an invalid group (group A with 40 cases of poor efficacy) and a valid group (group B with 344 cases of good efficacy). Several well-established analysis methods, namely, statistical test, correlation analysis, and complex network analysis, were used to analyze the data. This study reports that symptom networks of patients with pediatric cough are related to the effectiveness of treatment: a dense network of symptoms is associated with great difficulty in treatment. Interventions with the most different symptoms in the symptom network may have improved therapeutic effects.
